States May Restrict Lice Treatments
USA Today, Jan. 31
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lawmakers in at
least three states are considering restricting the use of treatments for
head lice and body mites that contain the insecticide lindane, raising
questions about whether states can regulate products approved by the Food
and Drug Administration. California lawmakers banned the prescription use of
lindane beginning in 2002, amid concerns that lindane levels in wastewater
treatment systems exceeded state standards. …The FDA estimates that head
lice affect and estimated 6 million to 12 million people a year, and
children often are sent home from school if they have head lice.
Lindane is the main ingredient used in most prescription head lice treatment
products. It is also used in some over the counter varieties.
Reports Have Been
Received Which Indicate
that several European countries are considering banning the use of all toxic
products on children’s heads. Closeness to the brain and the rate of
absorption through pours in the scalp are identified as reasons for this
concern.
One Pediatrician
fears use of
toxins may cause nervous system and brain damage. A leading school nurse
practitioner agrees. Both point out that dangerous seizures occur and
believe these can be traced to the use of toxic products on children’s
heads.
